A culture is inseparable from its landscape.
The terrain shapes the language, the climate creates the characters, and the native animals and plants determine what’s going to be for lunch.
So, on this day tour, we take you deep into the scenery that crafted the history and heritage of Ireland.
You venture into the peatbogs that provided fuel and heat to thousands of homes around rural Ireland. You discover the Connemara Mountains, where hundreds of Irish people fled when the English invaded in the 13th century. And you wander through the cobbled lanes and kaleidoscopically coloured houses of Galway, Ireland’s Capital of Culture.
Embark on this tour and learn to love the legends and landscapes of Connemara, Galway, and the far west.
Places you explore
Cong Village and Abbey - This tiny town is postcard-perfect Ireland. There’s a ruined abbey, a slow-flowing river, and a castle that hosts weddings for the rich and famous.
Lough Corrib - Keep your eyes peeled and grab your binoculars, this lovely lake boasts an abundance of wildlife.
Connemara Landscape - A rugged, mountainous landscape that possesses a dark beauty that’s evocative of the hardships of the people who once lived there.
Galway - Stone clad buildings line the winding lanes and medieval walls of this ancient harbour city.
Connemara National Park - Stunning vistas and superb wildlife abound within this famously serene park, from the towering peaks of the Twelve Bens to the panoramic Sky Road.
You leave Dublin and travel west. On your way across the green plains of central Ireland, you stop off for a refreshment and comfort break.
The landscapes begin to become impressively rugged as you arrive in Cong. This beautiful little town is famous for featuring in the Oscar-winning movie, The Quiet Man.
You choose what to do here. You can spend your time taking gorgeous photos of the castle and river, learn about the Augustine Monastery, or simply enjoy a large and delicious local lunch.
After you’ve had your fill of the quaint village sights, we venture to the scenic delights of Lough Corrib. This is the second largest lake in Ireland and is surrounded by the smooth slopes of the Connemara Mountains. Your friendly guide will help you try and spot the wildlife that scurries about here.
Now you can sit back, relax, look out your window, and watch the greatest show on earth. You wind down epic roads, over gorgeous vistas, and past stunning mountains as your guide drives you through the wilderness of Connemara. They’ll also tell you about the local legends that this land is famous for.
You take a photo stop at the Quiet Man Bridge before wandering over the Mollycullen Bogs. You’re wrong to think this bleak landscape is lifeless. The peatlands host an incredible array of wildlife, while at the same time the peat itself was used as fuel throughout Ireland.
Your last stop is the famous town of Galway. You should have around two hours here. This means you have time to buy local gifts for your friends, take in the atmosphere and tastes at a local pub, or enjoy the medieval architecture and cobbled lanes.
You arrive in Dublin in the evening.

2019 Days of Operation: Wednesdays, all year
Combine a morning visit to the historic Royal castle at Windsor with an in-depth tour around the famous sites of our awe inspiring and majestic capital city of London. See Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. Visit sites associated with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince William and Kate Middleton with photo stops at Kensington Palace plus the clubs and restaurants frequented by the young royals. All will be revealed by your friendly and knowledgeable guide.
•Maximum 18 people per tour
•Entry to Windsor Castle & St.George's Chapel
•Photo stops include Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace & Tower of London
•Travel by executive small coach with professional guide
We begin with a short drive from bustling London to the green fields of the Royal County of Berkshire and into the tranquil pastures of Runnymede; an important Saxon meeting place and historic settlement. This wooded valley bore witness to the conclusion of the Barons' Revolt that gave us Magna Carta, our major constitution sealed by King John in 1215. Your guide will discuss the implications of this document and discuss whether history has been unkind to our "bad King John" as the centuries have passed by.
Following the Thames upstream we arrive at Windsor Castle, fortress to some, Royal home to others, this impressive structure is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. Walk along the lavishly furnished rooms of the Royal apartments, visit St George's Chapel and relive the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. See the tombs of Kings and Queens and the heraldry of the Order of the Knights of the Garter. Head down to the Lower Ward to witness the Changing of the Guard (selected days only). After spending time in this majestic home enjoy a spot of lunch in the delightful town.
After lunch we follow the Thames river back towards London for an eye opening tour of this spectacular city. A chance to see old favourites like Parliament, Westminster Abbey, St.Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. We can see the city's more recent attractions; the Shard, the Millennium Bridge, the London Eye and the replica of Shakespeare's Globe theatre. By way of Buckingham Palace and St James's we take a fully guided drive past Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Downing Street, seeing some of our most iconic museums; the Victoria and Albert, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery and the Tate Modern.
Skirting the edges of London's beautiful open spaces by way of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, we come across Kensington Palace, home to Prince William and Catherine and in a house within the grounds, Prince Harry and Meghan. We tour some of the local areas where the younger Royals partied the night away such as the famous Mahiki nightclub and the restaurants of Chelsea.
Let's not forget that wherever we drive in London we will be constantly passing the homes of great writers and poets, politicians, adventurers, inventors, actors and artisans, famous or infamous, most of them gone but certainly not forgotten. Locations brought to life in film or literature, bustling markets, quiet backstreets, wartime destruction, peacetime rebuilding, private palaces, public gardens, a colourful history, a bloody past, lost buildings, lost rivers, stunning architecture and breathtaking views........undoubtedly something for everyone!!

~ Clifftop walk
~ Dunure and the Ayrshire Coast
~ Robert Burns birthplace museum
~ Alloway Old Kirk (Church)
~ The original "Brig O' Doon"
~ Whitelee Windfarm
A day spent discovering the highlights of rural Ayrshire – an area that is less well known to visitors but full of fascinating castles, culture and history. Relax as you explore the rolling hills and dramatic coastal scenery of one of Scotland’s “hidden secrets”.
This tour is ideal for those who love beautiful castles, gardens, walks and dramatic coastal views as well the poems, songs and stories of Robert Burns.
Departing: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (April to October)
Departing from Glasgow you quickly climb into the Renfrewshire Hills where the first stop of the day will give you a glimpse into the future at Europe’s largest windfarm – big enough to supply clean energy to over 180,000 homes. From here the road south into Ayrshire is quick and easy passing through rich farming country with many small towns and villages.
On arrival at Culzean Country Park you will have the choice of visiting the castle and gardens or just the gardens and woodland walks. An entry fee is payable on arrival. (Please note there is no free option at this stop). The castle dates from the late 18th Century – a peaceful time in Scottish history so it is less a defensive castle and more like a great country house with fine furniture and beautiful Robert Adam architecture. Sitting right on the edge of the cliffs looking out over the Firth of Clyde the views are superb and the surrounding gardens are beautiful. For those who like walking there are miles of tracks and footpaths through the grounds – taking in the Swan Pond, deer park, and walled gardens as well as rocky coves and sandy beaches. This will also be your lunch stop
After lunch you will follow the coastline to the tiny fishing village of Dunure with its ancient ruined castle and dark history. Continuing on, the road leads down into the village of Alloway. This is the countryside of Robert Burn’s – Scotland national poet - and you will see many places mentioned in his poems and songs –from Auld Kirk Alloway to the “Banks and Braes o’ Bonnie Doon”. The recently redeveloped visitor centre will tell you all you need to know about this remarkable man – born a poor farmer’s son but now famous as the writer of “Auld Lang Syne” – a song known and sung in friendship throughout the world. There are also riverside walks and the Auld Brig (old bridge) to explore as well as the haunted ruins of the old church. From here we return to Glasgow for approx. 18.00
Departure Point:

A day spent in the land of Scots heroes Rob Roy, Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, taking in the magnificent splendour of the medieval stronghold of Stirling Castle and the beautiful nature and forests of Scotland’s first National Park of Loch Lomond.
This tour is for those who love tales of Rob Roy and Braveheart, historic castles and a healthy walk in beautiful natural scenery with breathtaking views.
Depart Edinburgh 09.15am and travel northwest through the historic area of Linlithgowshire, close to the historic palace. The tragic Mary Queen of Scots was born at Linlithgow palace, and became Queen when she was only 6 days old. According to legend her father James V died of a broken heart when he discovered his wife had given birth to a daughter and not the son he was hoping for! Your route along the Forth Valley is one which has been used for thousands of years by invading armies; it was the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire and was later used by the English King Edward I as he marched proudly towards Stirling (only to be sent homewards to think again!). Nowadays it’s at the centre of one of Scotland’s most important industries with huge oil refineries dominating the area.
As you approach Stirling the magnificent castle dominates your view and you make your way up towards the high volcanic rock where it imposes itself upon the surrounding land. Known as the ‘Key to Scotland’, for centuries this was the most important castle in Scotland and the views from the top make it easy to see why.
To the north is the 220ft high tower of the National Wallace Monument commemorating Scotland’s great hero William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson in the Oscar-winning movie Braveheart. From the castle you can look down over the scene of Wallace’s greatest triumph, the battle of Stirling Bridge, where he defeated the English army in 1297. To the south is Bannockburn where, in 1314, the great Scottish warrior-king Robert the Bruce defeated the English army of Edward II. The battle was fought for possession of Stirling Castle but eventually led to a far greater prize for Scotland – the restoration of independence. It’s an area alive with history and you stop at the castle to give you time to soak up the history and heritage of this great site.
From Stirling you head into the Highlands and an area known as the Trossachs. Known as ‘The Highlands in Miniature’, it marks the point where the Lowlands meet the Highlands and entering this beautifully picturesque area feels like going into a different country. With its shimmering lochs, rugged mountain tops and forest-filled glens it’s easy to forget that this was once thought of as a dangerous frontier fought over by the fiercely territorial Highland clans. You stop here for lunch in one of the local villages - popular in Victorian times due to their wonderful location.
After lunch you ‘take the high road’ or back-road to Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest lochs at over 22 miles long, your will travel through the protected lands of Scotland’s first National Park. The route you take is along the eastern shores, a beautiful sheltered stretch of the loch with noble mountains dominated by Ben Lomond, one of the most climbed mountains in Scotland and our most southerly “Munro”.
You stop on the shores of the loch, the perfect place to enjoy a walk along the ‘bonny banks’, up to a viewpoint for a fantastic view of the loch and the mountain it’s named after, Ben Lomond. This tranquil area was once the home of Scotland’s famous highland folk hero, Rob Roy MacGregor. Made popular by many books and films Rob Roy lived an incredible life as a soldier, businessman, cattle-rustler and outlaw. By spending time on the trails by the loch you will undoubtedly be walking in the footsteps of one of Scotland’s great legends. There is also an alternative option to enjoy a drink at the local inn and sample the views. Leaving Loch Lomond you head east through the agricultural lands found on the west of Stirling. This area which was once an impassable bogland, inhabited only by wildfowl and a few outlaws. In the 1760s families were attracted here with offers of land and reduced rents provided they cleared the peat and expose the rich clay beneath. This scheme came to an end in 1865 and the area now is associated with some of the best hay cultivation in Britain. From here it is a short journey back to Edinburgh.

- Entry included to Highclere Castle
- Visit Downton Village, Downton Farm and Downton Church
- Departures available from London and Oxford
We head west of London to the delightful and charming Cotswolds which double up for Yorkshire in the Downton Abbey TV series. Here we can explore honey coloured villages and gentle rolling hills as we head over to the centuries-old farm at Cogges. We can enjoy a stroll though the farmyard and fields and say hello to the friendly animals that live here. We will learn of the role Cogges played in Downton Abbey as Yew Tree Farm, home of the Drewe family and the place where Lady Edith's daughter Marigold was raised. Take your seats in the Manor House for a specially recorded documentary centred on a day's filming here then relax over a coffee in the old milking barn.
A short drive through the Cotswolds will take us to Bampton which fans will immediately recognise as Downton Village. Here we can explore the church and graveyard at St Mary's where some of the characters have their final resting place. Inside the church we can see where many of them married, and at least one was jilted. Outside is Mrs Crawley's house and the village green. The Cottage Hospital lies next door and we can see the houses that they transformed into the Grantham Arms pub, the Dog and Duck and the village post office. Souvenir hunters will love the little gift shop here where Downton memorabilia can be purchased.
Next up is stately Downton Abbey itself! The magnificent house was designed by Charles Barry for the Earls of Carnarvon and Highclere Castle is still the home of the 8th Earl today. But for many of us this beautiful house and the landscaped gardens by "Capability" Brown will always be the house and grounds of Downton Abbey.
See the dining room, scene of some of Violet's most well loved comments, Lord Robert's library, the sitting room, the family bedrooms and walk down the grand staircase to the salon. Check out the Tutenkhamun and Egyptology exhibition in the basement and learn of the 5th Earl's expeditions to the Valley of the Kings. Explore the landscaped grounds and gardens and enjoy lunch or afternoon tea in the restaurant. Don't forget to visit some of the filming locations outside on other parts of estate. All in all a wonderful day of discovery for any Downton Abbey fan!
